North Shore Fishing Report
NE Minnesota Fly Fishing Reports - Steelhead Fly Fishing Reports
Brook Trout Fly Fishing Reports

10/28/11 Some smaller 'Bows and Brook Trout are being caught in the lower runs and pools on the Bap. Use small flies and swing them in the current breaks and fast pools. Focus mostly down by the mouth. Stripping a streamer or a small nymphs in the mouths out in lake superior could produce a looper or steelhead. Cast out in front of rivers and do a slow strip or let it sit under a float.
10/4/11 Pinks are being caught in the Baptism and some are in the Stewart. The water conditions are pretty low but fishable. Use indicators in the deep holes on the Baptism for a chance at a Steelhead or Chinook. Use chartreuse eggs for Steelhead and Chinook and pink eggs for Pinks. Put a Soft Hackle or Stone in the deep holes and rig that with an indicator with some weight. When rain finally arrives there should be some more steelhead making the way up the Bap as well as other Northshore rivers. 7/28/11 Lakes are the spot if trout are on your mind. With hot dog days of summer, you can expect most rivers to be tough and fish to be very picky. Not so in our beautiful lakes. Trout are hungry and crazy!! Toss buggers and small black midges. Hoppers will be around so bring a kick ass hopper pattern.
6/25/11 casting along the shore into lakes Superior in front of the mouths is producing some Lake trout and Loopers. Use small midges and brown woolly buggers or even a stonefly or two. For lakers use a streamer in white or silver pattern and cast out into the lake and strip. Most of the rivers have blown out due to the rains we had the last couple of days. This is prime time to hit the lakes for trout. They have been doing real good. Expect lots of black flys and Mesquitos, so wear bug dope. Casting buggers and small nymphs works great along shore line, expect the take to be violent!!!Starting next week the rivers should be in good shape again. Use small nymphs such as flashback pt's and hare's ears. Zug bugs in 14 and 16's work good also. "Fight fish and drink good Beer" Cheers. John
5/28/11 Lakers along the shore in front of the river mouths are smacking fly's. This is a hit and miss chance but when it happens the action can be fast and wild. Strip a white streamer out in Lake Superior and strip. Steelhead are being hooked also. This makes a great fly fishing adventure in early mornings and late evenings.

5/6/11 The North Shore has slowed down a bit near Duluth but things are heating up near Grand Marias. Expect good Steelheading on the Brule, DT and Kadunce. Use large Stones, Soft Hackles and Eggs in Light Cream to Light Orange also. Keep them deep in Deep Holes and Swing them in fast runs and drop offs. The rivers closer to Duluth are still producing Steelhead but not has good as it was a couple weeks ago. Most have done their thing on the beds and are dropping back to the lake. Keep an eye out for fin clippers and fisherman keeping under size fish. Report this immediatly to your nearest DNR field office or call the tip Hot Line @1-800-652-9093. Cheers. 4/27/11 The North Shore Steelhead have made it up to spawning waters so please give them a break and stay off places where these beauties are finding good gravel. There are still numerous areas where you can land a nice size steelhead in areas below the spawing areas. Stick to egg patterns in the light creams, light oranges and cerise. Maybe light blue with a green dot will work. Bugs are landing steelhead also. Dead Drifting Stones or X-legs in deep holes and fast runs. Water conditions are okay with last nights rains, still a little low but they have gone up some.

4/15/11 North Shore River conditions are a bit slow due to cold water temps(around upper thirtys), but nice steelhead are being caught in some rivers. Mostly on Egg Patterns in Steelhead Orange and Oregon Cheese, Pink Lady with a dot.  Some fly fishers have reported hooking fish on small black or dark brown x-legs. The river conditions up the shore are still pretty high and off colored, but alot better then a few days ago. Hit the deep slots and runs with indicators and lots of split and dont forget the big slow holes. Wade with extreme caution and use a wading staff and cleats. Expect rivers to be busy this weekend. Cheers. "Fight fish and drink good Beer" John
4/7/11 Some ice still clings to most of our North Shore Rivers. Some fish are being caught in deep pools near the mouths and some runs up the river. But for the most part we are waiting for warmer temps to get this ice and snow out of here. By mid next week things should start looking good. Cheers. "Fight fish and drink good Beer" John

3/26/11 Freezing conditions prevail on the North Shore. Temps have been hovering around the Low to Mid 30's which keeps the Ice in the rivers. So pray for rain and warm nights!! There has been some fly fishing out in the mouths, but not much success. You will have to search the pools above the mouths to get good drifts and a chance for a hook up. But come on!!! the fish are all stacked in those areas waiting for better conditions, leave them in peace!! River conditions will be great when the Ice clears out!! Some egg patterns are working in Chartreuse and Oregon Cheese. Indicators are the ticket but expect to hang up a bunch. Cheers. "Drink good beerand fight fish" John
