Blackhoof River?  (United States)
Modified By TheFlyMaster on 2/21/2008 8:28:30 AM)

Has anyone fished the Blackhoof River in recent years?  I was there last year right after opener and did see some spawning steelhead way up the river system, which is a very good sign that natural reproduction is taking place.  Anyone done any fly fishing during the early summer months for the native browns and brook trout in the river?  I'm just trying to get an idea of what to expect when I try it a few times this year because it's in my neck of the woods.

I just got my new Winston BIIx 4wt and can't wait to try it out this year.  This is my very first Winston and just holding makes you want to cast it.  This year is going to be a good year!

Tight lines!

Unfortunately no, but I'm curious to get a general idea of where you saw these steelhead. Was it above the continuous fishing boundary at Baker Road, or higher than Carlson Road?

There are a number of ongoing projects with regards to the Blackhoof and steelhead, beaver control/dam removal being one of them. The MN DNR states in a document or two that the Blackhoof and Knife account for over 50% of steelhead habitat in MN. The Knife system is listed at 45%, which would put the Blackhoof at 5% for sure, but it's probably more like 7-8% based upon other documentation.

There has been no recent stocking of the Blackhoof with respect to browns and brookies, but many other Carlton County streams get stockings. Browns for sure are taken there so there must be a fair amount of natural reproduction taking place. Never had much luck above CR 105 and it becomes difficult to access at any rate. Lower down you can fish a long ways through the Blackhoof WMA below the CR103 crossing although there is a stretch of private land to be aware of . Couple parking accesses at CR103, or you can hike (and it's a hike) down through the campground off of CR6.

The grade picks up below the campground, somewhat flatter above.

Cheers-

We were above the Baker Rd.  It wasn't last year, it was in the spring of '06 I was there last, well thats what my log book says.  Water temps 46 deg, normal flow for the amount of snow we had (we didn't have a big snow that winter), water was clear.  Air temps in the 50's.  Caught browns, rainbows and brook trout.

Very difficult river to fly fish.  No room to cast, lots of overhanging brush and vegatation.  Wading in the middle of the river was iffy as well.   But a rewarding stream to fish, even the if you catch a small one.  Saw a few spawning steelhead pairs.

Well that was the summary of my log book...I can't tell the whole thing

Re: Blackhoof River?  (N/A)

Thanks very much for the response, far more than was necessary!

It's an intriguing corner of the area no doubt. I'll be making the Nemadji circle tour this year & will let you know how I do.

Regards & thanks again-
