Late Summer Smallies (N/A)

Hello everybody, This August, a buddy and I are coming out from Colorado to do a Quetico trip. We are going to be spin fishing for walleye but also want to fly fish for smallies. I have been doing some research and it seems like the smallies don’t go to the surface in August; you have to go deeper off points and reefs. Is that the case? What about below rapids and falls? We are doing the “falls chain” up to Kawnipi Lake with plenty of quicker whitewater along the way. Should we throw at them through there? Lastly, those crazy crayfish patterns look super fun. How do you fish them? Thanks Dan FYI – The water in Colorado is staying higher for longer than normal but it is clear and lots bugs are going off. Just a single dry fly is all you need in the rivers right now. I went out for brookies this morning in a smaller creek up high. It was still a little fast with very few small pools that I could get to with out too much trouble. I caught 4 beautiful six inchers, which was fun, but in another week you would get 20 in the same time and space.

Hi, this is John Fehnel, owner of Great Lakes Fly Shop. Smallies on top are a must!!! They wack the Dahlbergs, especially our handtied patterns. Leech patterns are great also in black. You should be doing good with top water of course bring some below surface flys. Remember Walleye hit flys!!! Cheers. John
