August Bass Flies  (United States)

Hello all and congratulations on the new website. I am planning my first trip to Quetico for  Mid-August of 2008. As a beginner flyfisherman, I'm struggling with which flies to bring to Quetico on my trip and what techniques to use with them.

I understand that the Lakers will have gone deep by mid-August; Pike and Walleye are lower in the lake as well, leaving smallies as the Fly Fisherman's primary target. Is this the case or can the pike and walleye be taken with streamers and sinking line? What Bass flies are successful in Mid August in Quetico?

Any advice you have will be gratefully accepted :)

Willy

I haven't fished the BW yet, making my first trip this summer.  However I can say that my 2 favorite summer smallie patterns for northern MN are the Clouser deep minnow for general work and a Dahlberg Diver for the low light time at the end of the day.  You can't find a better Dahlberg than those tied by John at the Great Lakes Fly Company.  They are the best of everything, durable, nice to look at and most important the drive the smallies wild.

While flyguy and the good Mr. Hedlund are correct.  In August I would not be without several blue/white, green/white clousers and green and orange crayfish.  You will need to find mid-lake reefs to dredge up smallies and look to creek/stream/river mouths with slow water discharge early and late in the day for the Essox (Northern)!
